AppleScript. “What’s that?” you say. It’s a
powerful, easy-to-use, English-like scripting/
macro language for automating tasks on your
Mac. “But, I’m not a programmer. I don’t
know how to write computer code! Well,
you don’t really have to know how to write
programs, because there are many ready-made
scripts available, but if you want to try your
hand at it, you do have to know a few simple
rules. Our guest speaker this month is Ben
Waldie and he will show us just how easy it
is to get started using AppleScript and tell us
what some of those simple rules are.
Ben Waldie is the president and founder of
Automated Workflows, LLC, a company spe-
cializing in AppleScript and workflow automa-
tion consulting. He is also the president of The
Philadelphia Area AppleScript User’s Group.
Bens user group Web site says his presentation,
“focuses on the benefits of using AppleScript
for workflow automation. It contains a brief
overview of AppleScript, a list of benefits,
return on investment information, some basic
script writing, some AppleScript demonstra-
tions, and a question and answer session.0

Foy C. Sperring, a
resident of Long Island,
came to the June meeting
to demonstrate Audible
Books (recorded books,
periodicals, and radio
shows available on the
Web). The audiobooks
download to the Apple
Ipod.
BasicListener, at
$14.95 monthly, consists of one audiobook
chosen from the more than 5,900 titles avail-
able at the site, and one single-month sub-
scription from Audibles selection of more
than twenty-five newspaper and magazine
audio digests, public radio programs, original
comedy from Robin Williams, and more.
PremiumListener, for $19.95, allows a choice of
any two audiobooks per month, regardless of
individual prices.
Foy announced that there is still a selec-
tion of Ipods with a $100 rebate at J&R (when
purchased with a one-year subscription to
Audible Books). Be aware that each month’s
downloads must be requested in each 30-day
period or they are void. However, each selec-
tion may be downloaded at any time, all or in
part, or retranscribed if damaged. You may
also download the transcription to your hard
drive and burn a CD which can be read on PC
or Mac OS X. For more detailed information,
visit: www.audible.com.
Foy, the general manager of Audible Books,
and apparently an addict of audible books,
admits to circling the block a few times to hear
the end of a chapter before heading into his
office. 0
